What is West Coast Swing?

Updated: Mar 30

West Coast Swing is a fun, versatile social dance that allows for creativity and personal expression. It can be danced to a wide variety of music, including blues, pop, R&B, contemporary, acoustic, etc., making it an exciting dance for all ages and musical tastes. With a focus on lead-and-follow connection, this dance encourages improvisation, allowing both partners to contribute to the flow and musicality of the movement.

For beginners, learning West Coast Swing starts with understanding the rhythm and basic structure of the dance. The six- and eight-count patterns form the foundation, and as you gain confidence, you’ll develop the skills to create your own unique style. One of the best things about West Coast Swing is that it’s a social dance—meaning you don’t need a partner to start! You’ll be able to dance with different people at social events, clubs, and competitions, building both your skills and your community. With patience and practice, you’ll discover how West Coast Swing is not just a dance, but a conversation between partners, full of creativity and fun!
